Book Review: Business Maharajas by Gita Piramal

Business Maharajas by Gita Pramal came to the stands in 1996. According to Outlook, ‘The book is a delightful read.’

Certain books, make a ‘more’ delightful read when you read them years later – having missed out on them at the time they were published may not be a sense of complete loss. The subsequent comparison which follows: filling the period-gap can deliver a special kind of bonus to the reader. It is so, because the situation of the ‘real life’ characters can be compared with the present. Business Maharajas, does exactly that, and alike most good work, it refuses to become outdated.

The Business Maharajas of the author are: Dhirubhai Ambani, Rahul Bajaj, Aditya Birla, R. P. Goenka, Brij Mohan Khaitan, Bharat & Vijay Shah, and Ratan Tata. Most of them have faced the ‘ups and downs’ – which are a part and parcel of the business world. In fact, the higher the ‘business maharajas’ ascended the peaks of success, the tougher were the challenges – they faced.  The book chronicles the struggles that go with life… their life.

In her book, the author succeeds in making her narrative factful. From her exhaustive research, she lends substantial weight to reveal the storylines of her main subjects. Naturally, there are other people in the canvas of the book to complete the chapters.

The 474 page book presents: A Note on Sources, Appendix, Index, and A Select Bibliography.

The book is published by Penguin Books.
