Bhargo Devasaya Dheemahi
Dhiyo Yo Naha Prachodayat
Om

O, Supreme Lord!  The source of existence, intelligence, bliss.  The Creator of the universe.  May we prove worthy of Thy choice and acceptance; may we meet Thy glorious grace.  We meditate on Thy transcendental light.  Please illuminate our intellect and lead us to righteousness.

Om is an emblem of the Supreme.  Om is the sacred sound of the universe which the Supreme has created.

Bhoor = earth.
Bhuwah = sky.
Swaha = heaven.

Therefore, let us meditate on Ishware and His Glory, Who has created the universe; Who is fit to be worshipped; Who is the remover of all sins and ignorance.  May He enlighten our intellect.

The Maha Mantra – (Gayatri Mantra) is also known as Savitri Mantra.  Savitri is the name of the solar deity.  In reality, the ‘solar deity’ is referring to God:  As light.

Varenyam = It is the one which man can desire to possess from God.  It is (varenyam) like being good, seeing good, doing good.  It is a quality-force in search of Satyam, Shivam, Sundram.  In search of truth, knowledge and beauty.

Bhargo is a self-luminous force and power of God which grants us wisdom and drives away darkness.

Devasaya – Lord of Lords – God.
Dheemahi – Asking God to grant us intelligence.
Dhi = intellect.
Naha = not only to me, but to the entire world / universe.
Prachodayat = Lead us to divinity.

The Gayatri Mantra is considered as maha mantra (The Sanskrit word maha means great, mantra is a combination of two words: man means ‘mind’, and tra means ‘delivered’.  The Gayatri Mantra dispels darkness and ignorance).
