The Story of a Pearl

A pearl of exceeding beauty wanted to leave the sea, and it was restless lying inside the oyster.  The pearl hoped for the day when it would be set in the King’s crown.  Living in the palace seemed far better with so much fun, than living in the sea.

One day, the pearl was picked up by a pearl-diver and sold to a pearl-merchant – who gave it to the King.  The King was smitten by the pearl’s splendour and had the pearl set in his crown.  All day long, the pearl either heard the complaints of the ministers, or the cries of the subjects.  At night, the King snored heavily.

O, how the pearl missed the stillness of the sea!
