Women lead the way

Bakshi, whose 2014 documentary Daughters of Mother India has received a National award, and has the distinction of being the most awarded social campaign in the world, was in Dubai over the weekend. Bakshi presented the keynote address at the Global Women in Leadership Economic Forum there. Among the dignitaries she hobnobbed with were filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who spoke about gender equality in Bollywood, Nigerian billionaire Tonye Cole and erstwhile US President Barack Obama’s half-sister, Dr Auma Obama. Bakshi’s next docu-film (a teaser to this was released by the Under-Secretary General of the UN six months ago) will feature the voices of Indian men “who are changing the narrative on masculinity”, she tells us. “The reason I was invited to deliver the keynote address was because my main aim has always been to make a responsible film. When you take up urgent, burning issues, it’s very easy to sensationalise these, but I don’t want to leave my country in flames,” says the Mumbai girl.
