The Significance of Namaskar

Namaskar is a Sanskrit word, having its roots from another Sanskrit word ‘namaha’, meaning – paying obeisance.  Namaskar, also known as ‘namaste’ is a form of greeting practiced in the Indian Subcontinent.  While the words ‘namaste’ and namaskar are synonymous, yet, there is a fine difference between them because namaskar is regarded more spiritual. The greeting of namaskar is about acknowledging the Divine in another; it enhances the spiritual vibrations and attracts Divine consciousness.  The greeting is accompanied by a slight bow made with folded hands pressed together, palms touching with fingers pointed upwards and closely positioned in front of the chest.  The greeting is supposed to reduce one’s ego and increase humility.
