Emily Dickinson who ranks as a very important poet in America, lived as a recluse in Amherst, Massachussets. She was a deeply private person who hardly offered any of her work to be published during her lifetime. At the time of her death in 1886; 1,775 poems, dedicated as “letter to the world” were discovered. Her poems expressed her concepts on life and death, on love and nature.
Born in 1830, Emily Dickinson belonged to a prominent family – her father was a successful lawyer who served a term in Congress; Emily Dickinson’s grandfather founded Amherst College in 1821. Upon the poet’s death, her sister Lavinia Dickinson found many of her poems hidden among her (Emily’s) possessions.
